As we move into 2025, it's a great time to reset and create realistic and sustainable health goals. Whether focusing on mindful eating, finding healthy holiday treats, or adopting non-restrictive dieting, the key is to set goals that align with your values and support long-term health. Here's a breakdown of how to set yourself up for success in the new year with goals that feel good, are achievable, and actually last.

1. Start with SMART Goals

To ensure your health goals are realistic and achievable, use the SMART framework:

  • Specific: What exactly do you want to accomplish?

  • Measurable: How will you track your progress?

  • Attainable: Set goals that are realistic not overly restrictive.

  • Relevant: Choose goals that matter to your health journey.

  • Time-bound: When do you want to achieve this?

For example, let's say you want to improve your eating habits mindfully. Instead of saying, "I will eat healthier," make it SMART: "I will practice mindful eating by eating dinner without distractions at least five times a week for the next month."

This is specific, measurable, and achievable. And as you track your progress, you can celebrate each mindful eating moment!

2. Make It a Routine (and Have Fun with It!)

Establishing a routine that works for you is a huge part of setting yourself up for success. If your goals feel like a chore, it is extremely easy to abandon them. The key is to make them enjoyable and not feel like you are obligated to complete something. Whether you're aiming to eat mindfully or add more nutritious snacks, consistency matters!

Fun Example: If you're trying to eat more nutritious food, set a goal to incorporate balanced meals or snacks into your routine. This way, you're sticking to your mindful eating habits while having fun exploring new flavors. These small steps can make a big difference, whether it's a colorful lunch or a creative charcuterie board.

If you're focused on healthy holiday eating and staying on track at events, don't stress about restrictive dieting—aim for balance. Keep your meals satisfying, and enjoy those treats guilt-free!

3. Track Progress and Celebrate the Wins!

Tracking your progress helps you stay accountable and reminds you of how far you've come. Plus, those mini-wins deserve to be celebrated!

Fun Example: Track your success with a simple habit tracker for your health goal, whether it's eating more vegetables or drinking more water. You could even give yourself a small reward after reaching a milestone (hello, a new yoga mat, or a cooking class!).

If you're working on mindful eating for weight loss, the key is consistency, not perfection. Celebrate each time you slow down and focus on your meal, as it's a step closer to healthier habits.

4. Build Accountability (Because We All Need a Cheerleader)

Having someone to check in with can boost your motivation. Accountability is a game changer, whether it's a friend, a coach, or a community. Share your goals with someone who will cheer you on and keep you motivated.

Fun Example: Start a "Veggie Meal Challenge" with a friend! Share recipes and take pictures of your meals, from colorful plates to twists on your favorite snacks. Or, join a group at Nourished with Emily to practice mindful eating tips and share your progress. With accountability, you're more likely to stick with your goals, especially during the holiday season when temptations are everywhere!

5. Be Flexible and Kind to Yourself

Life happens, and sometimes, you may not hit a health goals right away. The key is to be flexible and avoid falling into the trap of all-or-nothing thinking. If you enjoy a slice of cake at a get-together or happen to skip your workout, that's okay. The goal is progress, not perfection.

Fun Example: If you slip up with your eating habits or don't stick to your workout routine, simply reset your focus. You might say, "Okay, I'll get in a short walk today after dinner," or "I'll prepare a PCC snack for this weekend's family gathering." It is all about making healthy habits sustainable, never about punishing yourself.

Why You Should Set Realistic Health Goals

Setting realistic, sustainable health goals is not about achieving flawlessness—it's about taking small, consistent steps toward feeling better and living healthier. Whether you're working on non-restrictive dieting, balanced eating, or adopting mindful eating habits, the key is to create a plan that works with your lifestyle and honors your body's needs. Remember, health and wellness is a journey, not a destination.

By incorporating mindful eating techniques, choosing healthy holiday recipes, and practicing intuitive eating, you can create goals that aren't just achievable—they're also fun and rewarding! Here's to setting those goals for 2025, embracing a balanced approach to health, and loving every step of the way! You've got this!
